The Walton College of Business Landscape Master Plan at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville, AR / 2021
In 2021, Ground Control was invited to develop the Walton College of Business Landscape Master Plan. The plan integrates disparate landscape spaces within the College Quad and focuses on improving the physical and mental health of faculty and students. The plan proposes activating the Oak Ridge, a unique natural area south of the quad with recreational opportunities and areas for outdoor classrooms and studies, as well as opening up view corridors to the expansive views of the Fayetteville hills beyond, reinforcing the College’s connection to the region. The plan also proposes pedestrianizing Fairview Street and service drive to the Walton Quad. The plan providing trailhead access to the Oak Ridge while activating the existing quad with outdoor areas for study and gathering, including several pavilions to provide much needed shade.
Alongside Digsau Architects, Ground Control worked on a study for the new building and proposed program. The Walton College Study, started in late 2022, documented existing conditions of the college’s buildings, analyzed programmatic relationships among departments, and surveyed faculty, staff, and student perceptions of the college’s spaces. The design capitalizes on the building's unique location along the Oak Ridge with commanding views over the campus and Fayetteville to the east and views to the Boston Mountains to the south. The building and exterior spaces are utilized as a vertical circulator to negotiate the 30’ grade change from the Harmon Avenue Garage to the Walton Quad.
