The Green House Garden Doylestown, PA / 2023

The Green House Garden is an intimate outdoor room that extends the living space of an 1850s Colonial home in the heart of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. A central lawn panel organizes the garden, framed by a performance deck adjoining the house and a whimsical outdoor fireplace at the opposite end.

Reclaimed and locally sourced materials root the project in the region. Granite cobbles, stepping stones, steps, seat walls, and stone for the fireplace were salvaged from a demolished pier at Penn’s Landing in Center City Philadelphia. The random-width decking is crafted from white oak sourced in northern Bucks County. Fastigiate hornbeams enclose the garden and will be clipped over time to form a formal hedge, reinforcing the space’s intimate, architectural character.
