Student Farm at The Pennsylvania State University State College, PA / Ongoing
The landscape improvements for the PSU Student Farm will reinforce the agricultural character of the site, providing seamless connections between the working Farm and proposed Farm hub building. The simple functional landscape celebrates the theatre of natural systems reflecting the Farm’s mission and objectives, providing seasonal interest, production capacity, pollinator and wildlife habitat, and improved stormwater control and water quality.
Three entry gateways, located to the northwest along Big Hollow Rd., to the southeast at the back corner of the parking lot, and to the southwest entry from Farm Road, will improve wayfinding, mark entry locations and provide sense of arrival to the Farm. An entry plaza from the parking lot will serve as a transitional and gathering space at this gateway entry to the Farm. Adjacent to the entry plaza accessible parking improvements are proposed to increase Farm access for users and visitors of all capacity.
The use of vernacular materials, which are functional, durable and low maintenance, provides a cost effective strategy and reinforces the agricultural character of the site. Stormwater improvements are proposed to improve on site infiltration, as well as the capture, collection, and conveyance of stormwater to prevent erosion and flooding of farm facilities. Berms and/or bioswales may be implemented to direct and temporarily store stormwater to allow for infiltration. Water shed from farm structures may be captured for irrigation use and managed to prevent soil erosion. These stormwater improvements are a critical component of the didactic landscape, providing opportunities for users and guests to learn about the symbiotic nature of Farm operations and processes embedded in the mission and work performed. The expansion of pollinator meadows and stormwater bog gardens, provide diverse functional and productive landscapes, which further support and enhance the opportunities for experimentation and education as the Farm continues to grow and evolve.
