Nylon Capital Seaford, DE / Under Construction
At Nylon Capital, the collective vision was simple: view existing structures as assets rather than liabilities. By reusing existing materials, we were not just able to reduce financial and environmental impacts of off-haul, but we utilized assets to create a unique sense of identity for the campus. The design team made it our mission to reuse as many materials as possible, not because it was easy, but because it was hard. A hardened post-suburban landscape firmly rooted in a sense of place. Our concept was to take what was left of the suburban ruins and turn them on their head…literally.
Nylon Capital is a 23-acre institutional, retail and recreational incubator located in the heart of Seaford, Delaware. The site was an abandoned suburban strip mall which provided a backbone for the strategic surgery of selective demolition and proposed structures, creating a pedestrian friendly post-suburban landscape. New boutique retail space and intimate courtyard spaces replace derelict big box retail, celebrating the history and character of the site. New coworking spaces with intimate lightwells and outdoor works spaces are nestled into the ruins of an abandoned grocery store .
The landscape framework for Nylon Capital is centered around The Seaford Spine, which punches through the existing buildings, exposing the remaining structures and creating strong visual connections to the Central Park and adjacent buildings. The park includes a stage for performances, outdoor beer garden, and recreation spaces.
